GERMAN SHEPHERD DOG CLUB OF KENT
Established  1968

In 1968 Mrs I Mitchell(Ruthenwald) approached a group of exhibitors at one of the championship shows held at Olympia, London with a view to establishing a club in Kent for Alsatian (as they were then known) enthusiasts in that county.

Among the founder members were Joan Pearce (Bokra), Mr & Mrs Swigciski (Cosalta), Mr & Mrs Ruff ( Rondetto) & Mr & Mrs Hodges (Zopel) to name but a few. The Kennel club gave its permission and the inaugural meeting of founder members of the Alsatian Club of Kent was held on 9th March 1969 at Maidstone.

Two open shows were held that year at the Agricultural Hall in Maidstone in August a loss of 1s.9d and in November made a profit of 5s.3d (£52 in today's money)! The venue cost 12s.6d to hire (£12) -(those were the days.) In 1970 I was asked to take over as Treasurer and have been there ever since! Derek and Margaret Fenton soon joined the club and Derek took over the task of Secretary. In due course the Kennel Club agreed a change of name and it became the German Shepherd Dog Club of Kent. We finally achieved championship show status in 1978.

The German Shepherd Dog Club Of Kent has seen many changes over the years, the present committee and officers are as dedicated now as they were 40 years ago which makes this club so successful today. At the beginning of 2008 we held a very successful Championship show with over 186 entries, we also received a Excellent from The Kennel Club.
